Hipster takeover. Again...
Hipster takeover. from Jessica Lehrman on Vimeo.
The same type of definition given to "Bohemian" starting in early 19th Century. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bohemianism
I've seen this response since I was a kid hanging in Venice, California in '50s. They were called "Beats" then. Mainstream squares hated them, made fun of them -- then adopted all their values.
Same thing always - you aren't one if you say you are. It's always a putdown, like calling someone a "poser". It's always a group identity that wants to be considered different from Mainstream.
In the '60s they were Hippies, the '70s Punks, '80s Bohos, '90s Grunge, the '00s Hipsters. What will they be called in the '10s?
The other thing that's been common with all the "underground" subcultures -- they are the kids having fun. They are the smart kids, they are the ones who create, they are ones who give the decade an identity. They are the ones that the "squares', the "straights", the "normals", the "mainstream" are envious of, wish they were and 20 years later, claim to have been.
