A couple of weeks ago I belatedly discovered Chavela Vargas, the monumental Mexican Ranchera singer, I've been rockn her powerful, heart-breaking performances on my playlists since.
This week, I've caught on to a new, young Spanish singer, Concha Buika, who loves Chavela and does creative justice to the timeless Rancheras. Her album has the great Cuban pianist, Chucho Valdés, backing her craggy, gypsy-sounding voice as they bring the deep, sorrowful beauty of José Alfredo Jiménez songs to an international audience.
You should take the serious, admiring tone of my description, that I am touched.
